“The next holding of Carifesta XI will be in Suriname in 2013. Carifesta is a showcase for Caribbean art and was first held in Guyana in 1972. It was the brainchild of former Guyanese President Forbes Burnham. He held a number of conferences with Caribbean artist and writers that eventually led to the first Carifesta. Carifesta has been held at regular intervals since then in several Caribbean states. The last time it was held was in 2008 in Guyana.
Suriname has already set up an office to manage the event. Carifesta now falls under a regional intiative to develop cultural events. In 2008 a Task Force was set up to “…to develop a comprehensive Regional Development Strategy and Action Plan for the Cultural Industries in CARICOM. This Task Force was also to make recommendations for an appropriate incentives regime and financing mechanism for the cultural industries, among other developmental areas to be addressed.
Suriname has previously hosted Carifesta in 2003. It was a “hugely successful event” says Kenton Wyatt one of the artists who came.”
